Welcome to the webcast of the 1st Eastern European Conference on Rare Diseases and Orphan Drugs “Promotion of Healthcare and Research on Rare Diseases and Orphan Drugs in Eastern European Countries” The conference took place on 27 May 2005 in the beautiful town of Plovdiv (Bulgaria) with the official support and partnership of the Bulgarian Ministry of Health and under the auspices of the Mayor of Plovdiv. The aim of the conference was to raise the governmental and public awareness in Eastern Europe on rare diseases and orphan drugs. This first and very important event was supported by Genzyme (main sponsor), Sanofi-Aventis (sponsor) and TKT Europe (sponsor) as well as by the official partners All Channels Communication and Neoprint. At the opening ceremony (video for broadband, dial-up), participants were addressed by Dr. Ivan Chomakov (Mayor of Plovdiv, PDF) and Mrs. Catherine Berens (DG Research). An official representative of the Bulgarian Ministry of Health read a welcome letter on the behalf of Mr. Slavcho Bogoev (Minister of Health, Bulgaria, PDF). The Union of Bulgarian Philatelists supported the conference by the issue of a jubilee first day cover, postmark and 2 philatelic exhibitions. Thus the information about the conference will be disseminated among people from all over the world and will increase the public awareness on the problems of patients with rare diseases and need of extended research globally.
